The 10 Startups in New York’s Cutting ‘Edge’ of Edtech Innovation

Oct 26, 2015

NEW YORK EDTECH’S CUTTING EDGE: School is underway for New York’s aspiring edtech entrepreneurs. Ten startups are currently working their way through the EDGE Accelerator, a three-month program that offers participating teams up to $170,000 in funding. Teams will wraps up on December 16 with a Demo Day in front of potential investors at National Education Week, a three-day event hosted by EDGE.

This may be the first cohort for the EDGE program, but it’s the third class of companies for founders Don Burton and Jonathan Harber, who previously ran the Kaplan-Techstars EdTech Accelerator—and worked with over 20 startups—before Kaplan withdrew its support.

Of the 560 applications received from around the world, the ten that made the cut are:

  • Coach Tube: online marketplace for sports instructional videos
  • CredSpark: quiz engine that helps publishers and brands deliver formative assessments to better understand their customers
  • ExpertKnowledge: content development tool that helps Fortune 5000 clients create and deliver courses
  • Erudite Science: intelligent tutoring product for K-12 math and sciences
  • Junior Explorers: monthly subscription service of activities that encourages kids and families to explore wildlife and nature
  • Kinems: developer of motion games designed to help improve children’s cognitive and motor skills
  • Little Bird: HR management platform for schools
  • BuildAcademy.com: provider of online courses for learners in the “infrastructure” sector, which includes architecture, structural engineering, construction and real estate
  • Ruckus Learning: digital reading platform featuring popular children’s brands like Curious George and My Little Pony
  • Thrively: developer of “Strength Assessment” tools measure students for non-cognitive attributes like character and grit
